High tech art with a sense of humor (TED Talk of the week)

November 27, 2011 As I mentioned last week, I regularly watch TED Talks for a peek at some of more creative things that global innovators are working on. I've got another TED Talk that I'd like highlight this week. It's called "High-tech art (with a sense of humor)" by Arpna Rao.
In this eight-minute video Rao shows off eight works of art that she created in India with her collaborator, Danish artist Soren Pors. This isn't your run-of-the-mill contemporary art. Rao and Pors do "installation art" that infuses tech into three dimensional art that often invites interaction from its viewers.
Some of the works include a golden typewriter that can send email, a motion-sensitive wall hanging that encourages playful interaction, and an upside down statue that gradually moves and makes people want to help it. All the works are super-creative and have a great playfulness, and the use of technology is very practical.
"We work with a lot of technology but we don't really love technology because it gives us a lot of pain in our work over years and years," Rao said with a smile.
I often have a hard time appreciating a lot of contemporary art because it can be so cold and cynical, but the stuff from Pors & Rao is really enjoyable. I love their approach to rethinking what art can be in the 21st century. They use modern tools to do things that weren't possible in the past and they do a great job of addressing their works to a 21st century audience that has a much shorter attention span and much greater expectations of interaction from their entertainment.
