Digital storytellers: This is your revolution
Jason Hiner |
November 20, 2011 I originally created this video when I launched the new version of my personal site on Squarespace in March 2010 and I recently decided to update it and relaunch it in early 2012. But, as I started to review it, I had two thoughts. First, I think the message is still right on target and very current (other than a reference to Flip Video). Second, if I want to improve it, I should put out a call to my friends and colleagues via Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ and invite them to provide some suggestions.
The video's primary message is that despite all of the current upheaval in the media business -- an indeed, because of it -- there's never been a more exciting time to be a storyteller, whether you're a journalist, an author, a photographer, or a filmmaker.
Take a look and let me know what you think. Does the music fit the theme? Are there too many different types of images? How's the pace? What other information or opportunities should I highlight?

Well put - you're actually highlighting a revolution that I don't believe many people have yet to comprehend - so many of my traditional media colleagues are surprisingly ignorant (or fearful) of the profound changes in storytelling technology we now have at our disposal. The hectic imagery, I believe, is fine - how else could you effectively show the depth and diversity of this revolution. It also helps to build excitement and drives home your point. The pace is fine. The music is workable, but I wonder if it needs a less corporate and more contemporary feel - reflecting the new age that you're describing. I hope that helps.
You've made a really good point there in your vid Jason. I guess the background music for me is not appropriate for the theme. You need to change it a little bit to make it more engaging.
Hi Jason,
Your video is spot-on and certainly hit home with me. As a former radio news reporter and news director, I'm loving this tech revolution, too.
The ability to connect with our fellow humans through so many free platforms is amazing. News is about people, and people love great stories. The true art is being able to delve into the nuggets that are in virtually every story/situation. Most are overlooked. Anyone who claims they lack content or have "writer's block" leaves me puzzled. Humanity is all around us, if only they could connect the dots.
I've written plenty of blog posts and have also tapped into the (dated) Flipcam, creating short videos to connect with people who "are not readers." Using visuals and images to tap into people's emotions are important, too.
This is some revolution.
Cheers,
Susan
